Attending a Thai Wedding งานแต่งงาน
This past weekend, a teacher at my school got married. Kruu (Thai for teacher) Ae invited all of the English teachers to her wedding with beautiful invitations! I felt SO welcome and I sincerely appreciated the invitation. We were told to wear blue, as every Thai wedding has a theme that everyone has to dress to. So, I put on my blue dress and headed for the wedding in the van she graciously provided for the teachers; I was prepared, or so I thought!
However, I had NO concept of the concert, show, carnival, and just all around festival I was about to attend.
Doesn't this look like a HUGE festival?? Not a wedding, but it was amazing!
This was the photo area that was set up right when you arrive to the wedding. The couple stands here and takes photos with friends and family for hours. We took pictures, however I unfortunately don't have a copy of any.
Performers completed many dances, people sang, and the entertainers told jokes. We had a table at the front saved for us and the entertainers immediately asked all of us where we were from since we were the only non Thai people in attendance!
Every table had every Thai food imaginable: fried rice, snacks, fish, meat, everything! Each table also had their own bottle of Thai whiskey (a common thing for Thai weddings).
Although the wedding was beautiful, we were seated right next to many of the bright lights, which attracted ALL OF THE BUGS. I have literally never seen so many bugs before in my entire life. The bugs were everywhere, all over everything. I had dreams about bugs for two days after this and found dead bugs in my hair that night, that's how many bugs were at our table!
So, because of the bugs, we decided we just had to get up and dance since eating the great food wasn't really an option and just waiting to be landed on wasn't a real option either.
We tore it up on the dance floor and had a really great time dancing to the Thai music. While I was out there, I met the sweetest little girls who I think lived on the property (big open field with tiny open house) where the wedding took place because they were in cute little pajamas and were very hesitant to join the party. Once I convinced them to dance, we had an amazing time! They were so giving, kind, silly, and just loving. Very typical of the wonderful people of Thailand. These little girls made my heart so happy and solidified the reason I came to this wonderful place.
